Erasing Self
Everyone is concerned (even just a little) about personal identity -who we are, and how we relate to those around us. In a Christian context, the goal that is often spoken about is to become “more like Christ”. And even though this is absolutely true, our finite minds still have a way to warp this into something unhealthy.
The objective of the Holy Spirit through the Scriptures is NOT for us to erase ourselves as we become more like Jesus. In other words, the goal is NOT to become a mini-Jesus clone. For one, it is impossible to become like Jesus, because HE was an unrepeatable image of God’s genius and power at work. Simply put: we cannot be The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
I believe the beautiful intention of God is for our identities to be redeemed as we become more like Jesus. Our unique personalities, dispositions, gifts, and passions are God-given and will not be God-erased as you become more like His Son. Rather, our unique self is purified and more complete in Jesus. To speak with a Biblical tone, as you are redeemed, you become more refined.
